THROW THE O

The University of Oregon is the #5 selling client for Nike. And while they’ve done a great job telling the story of things that sell football jerseys, they hadn’t focused on the school part of the school.

Our job was to talk about science, the humanities, and art, attract the top students in Oregon and beyond, and gain the approval of some very influential alumni.  And do it all without putting a crimp in jersey sales. And getting it approved by Tinker Hatfield at Nike (zero pressure). I spent the better part of a year in Eugene and Portland, defining strategy, working through ideas, presenting to everyone on campus, hanging with The Duck, and ultimately creating brand work for the school as a whole along with a capital campaign, work for the admissions department and the Business School.

“We If” TV:60

This spot launched during the Rose Bowl. It drove people to an custom landing page, along with an interactive site experience to dive deeper into UO. Web traffic quadrupled within an hour of its airing, while clicks through to the admissions page increased another 6x.

The Answer Pack

High school students get a ton of mail from universities. Unsurprisingly, most gets tossed. So we sent them something they could actually use, rather than just another mailer. It’s a deck of cards with an answer on the front of each one all found at the University of Oregon. If the student isn’t interested, they’ve got a great deck of UO branded cards. If they are, they can Google any of the answers and learn more about the university. Win-win.

News Box

There are a lot of great stories going on at the University of Oregon but the local media doesn’t always want to celebrate them. Tracktown Pizza knows what’s up, so we partnered to share a few directly on their pizza boxes during homecoming weekend.

Viewbook

For many who can’t visit before applying, the viewbook is the only opportunity for us to share what’s great about Oregon in a format purely directed at incoming students. Our viewbook was designed to be like the school, fun to spend time with and full of extra info the more you explore.

Plant Your Flag

Getting accepted to college is a solitary experience –  and a boring one at that. You receive a letter and then decide if you want to go, mail it in, maybe post on instagram. Woop Woop.

We mailed every accepted student a poster with their name on it and a custom web address. Arriving on your personal welcome page you would get a message from the University and an opportunity to plant your flag alongside all of the other students who had accepted. The map was interactive, allowing you to see where everyone was coming from, reinforcing that it’s not a solitary decision but rather becoming a part of something bigger.

Oh, and we threw a custom car flag in that tube for good measure – because driving around town is way cooler with an O on your Civic.

Yonder

The University of Oregon is an engine that drives the state of Oregon. From creating major businesses to doing research that benefits the full ecosystem of the state, the University’s impact is far-reaching. But the public, while very aware of the story of Nike, doesn’t know even a tenth of what the University has done beyond that.

So we decided to take people on a magical mystery tour of the state – never the same thing twice – and let them tell others in their own words. Oh, and we wouldn’t tell them where they were going. We called it Yonder.

Users would sign up on the website to commit to a bus ride into the unknown, with a certain hour commitment applied to it. Tours could range from 2 hours to 2 days with the guarantee it would be an awesome learning experience, fun, and very Duck-centric. From dropping by Columbia sportswear (an alumni-owned company) to camping at the top of Mt. Hood with John Dahlem, an alumni who completed the Explorer’s Grand Slam, nothing was off-limits.

The Uoniverse

We made a program that aggregated all the data the university had gathered on what alumni’s jobs were and the courses they took during their time at UO. We tied it into curriculums based on every major you could graduate with and then asked a simple question:

“What are you interested in?”

Then we showed them all the majors that could be applicable, people who had jobs in that field, and the courses required to get there. Simple. It’s one thing to try to explain the value of a liberal arts education en route to becoming an engineer, it’s another to just show actual engineers and what they took to get there.

5 Minute Flying Lessons

The best way for people to know what it’s like to learn at UO is to let them learn from UO. Five Minute Flying Lessons is a podcast highlighting our professors and letting them share mini-lessons in an easily accessible format. Conducting with Rodney Dorsey. Superheroes with Ben Saunders. Advertising with Deb Morrison. Just a few of the many great educators at the University of Oregon, straight to your Airpods.

Business School Outdoor Retailer Takeover

Business school recruits differently. You’re not looking for high school kids, or even necessarily students straight out of college. You’re looking for the best and brightest people who already have careers, and convince them to stop what they’re doing and join you in Eugene.

A takeover of the Outdoor Retailer conference is near-impossible with our budget, so we took it over by surrounding it with our ethos. Collaboration. Sustainability. What’s good for the world.

We had a morning 5k with Oregon runner Ashton Eaton. A resting/gathering/communication space with local beer and coffee, all made in partnership with UO. And instead of advertising, we let our cups do the talking.

Business School Travel Recruitment

Normal people fly. But Business People live in airports, on planes, and in hotel rooms. If you’re looking for the next generation of leaders to come to your B-School. that’s the place to start. Ads on Delta’s seat back tables, in the in-flight magazine, and even a first-class comfort pack for trips in and out of Portland made certain that travelers knew that the best school for them to evolve their career with was right here in Oregon.
